Study on management of 726 victims in military hospitals following Yushu earthquake in Qinghai province

Objective To retrospectively analyze the management and experience of earthquake patients in military hospitals following Yushu earthquake in Qinghai province.Methods Data on 726 earthquake patients admitted into military hospitals from Apr.15 to Apr.24 were analyzed.Results Among 726 earthquake victims,there were 598 cases of earthquake injury,including combined injury 4 cases,multiple trauma 43 cases,single-part trauma 450 cases,multi-parts trauma 100 cases,thoracic-abdominal injury 1 case.There were 44 cases of open wound and 554 cases of closed injury.Infection was observed in 10 cases of open wound(22.7%).There was 1 case of gas gangrene(2.3%).A total of 157 cases underwent surgical treatment,116 cases received elective surgery,325 cases underwent non-surgical treatment.Totally 100 victims got acute plateau sickness,including acute plateau response 67 cases,acute pulmonary edema 31 cases,cerebral edema 2 cases,and 28 victims of other diseases.There was no death in all 726 victims.Conclusion For serious earthquake patients,it should emphasize grading treatment.Specific treatment at early stage and multi-disciplinary approach can notably improve cure rate and reduce disability rate.Furthermore,we need to standardize the diagnosis and treatment of trauma,AIS-ISS and keep integrity of clinical data.Executing the tasks under special environment must have special security measures.
