Evaluation of Perigastric Varices with 16-Detector Row CT Portography

Abstract

Objective To describe the 16-detector row CT manifestations of perigastric varices in portal hypertension and to discuss its role in the management of gastric varices.Materials and Methods Abdominal enhanced CT scans were performed in 178 patients suspected with gastric varices, and CT portography was done in postprocessing work station.Results On CT portography, gastric fundic varices were seen in 64 cases. Left gastric vein in 63 cases, short gastric vein and posterior gastric vein in 45 cases, 31 of which accompanied by LGV, splenorenal shunts or gastrorenal shunts (GRS) in 63 cases, gastroepiploic vein in 5 cases.Conclusion 16-detector row CT portography has excellent capability to demonstrate perigastric varices in 3D positional relationships from multiple directions by rearranging images. It is useful for selecting patients, planning procedure, and eventually evaluating the results.
