Abstract
A new polyelectrolyte hydrogel and its hybrid hydrogel with the Laponite clay were prepared, and their swelling properties were investigated. In comparison with pure polyelectrolyte hydrogel, the hybrid hydrogel containing the clay has enhanced swelling ability and increased pH-sensitivity. The swelling mechanism of these hydrogels was found to follow the Fickian diffusion mode.
