Abstract

Based on the study and analysis of the accumulated data on drilling section, spore-pollen analysis, microfossil, palaeomagnetic and ()~(14)C dating, the Quaternary System of the Yangtze delta area is contained five transgression, that is, from old to new: the 5th transgression layer (Baoshan transgression), the 4th transgression layer (Jiading transgression), the 3rd transgression layer (Kunshan transgression), the 2nd transgression layer (Gehu transgression), The 1st transgression layer (Zhenjiang transgression). Their ages are respectively middle early Pleistocene Subepoch (1.8—2.0 Ma B.P.), early middle Pleistocene Subepoch (0.78—0.45 Ma B.P.), early late Pleistocene subepoch (126—70 Ka B.P.), late late Pleistocene Subepoch (40—20 Ka B.P.) and Holocene epoch (beginning at 10 Ka B.P.).
