Abstract

Objective To describe the status of overweight and obesity and their impact on serum lipid levels, the prevalence of dyslipidemia of urban and rural residents in Hubei province. Methods According to the 2002 Chinese residents nutrition and health survey,3738 individuals in different age groups from the households were surveyed.Overweight/obesity,hyperlipidemia were based mainly on the height, weight, fasting lipid levels diagnosed by the local hospitals. Results The overweight prevalence in Hubei province of urban and rural residents for male was 25.0%,female,26.3%;Obesity rates for male was 7.1%,for female,6.6%.the average triglyceride levels of under-weight,normal weight, overweight and obese residents was 0.77 mmol/L,0.98 mmol/L,1.33 mmol/L,1.63 mmol / L,respectively;the average high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels of under-weight,normal weight, overweight and obese residents was 1.45 mmol/L,1.43 mmol/L,1.31 mmol / L,1.18 mmol / L,respectively;Total cholesterol of under-weight,normal weight, overweight and obese residents was 3.54 mmol/L,3.88 mmol/L,4.19 mmol/L,4.31 mmol/L,respectively.The hyperlipidemia prevalence rates of under-weight,normal weight, overweight and obese residents was 3.5%,9.7%,25.8%,45.5%.While it was 3.2%,8.1%,21.7%,14.3% was for those under the age of 18;8.8%,10.1%,26.0%,47.1% was for adult residents over the age of 18.Conclusion The overweight prevalence in female was significantly higher than that in male,The obesity prevalence in male was slightly higher than that in female. For total cholesterol and triglyceride levels in Hubei province, the effects of increasing with body mass index(BMI) was very obvious, either in urban or rural area,high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels decreased with the increasing of body mass index. The prevalence of hyperlipidemia rose with increased body mass index. The hyperlipidemia prevalence rate in overweight, obesity groups was significantly higher than that in under-weight,normal weight population.
