Abstract
ObjectivesTo evaluate the efficacy of Guglielmi detachable coil (GDC) embolization in treatment of intracranial aneurysms and summarize the main points of GDC manipulation.MethodsSixty-three patients were examined with digital substraction angiography(DSA) and 66 intracranial aneurysms were found , including 19 aneurysms in the anterior communication artery, 23 in the posterior communication artery, 11 in the middle cerebral artery, 6 in the anterior cerebral artery and 7 in the other locations. Afterwards GDC was used for embolization therapy.ResultsSixty-three patients with 66 aneurysms were successfully embolized with GDCs. Complete embolization achieved in 18 patients and incomplete in 45 patients; while six aneurysms ruptured during the performance, but all cured after treatment. Vascular spasm occurred in 2 patients, one of them had slight hemiplegia. Twenty-two patients with 23 aneurysms were followed-up by DSA examination 1 year after operation. No obvious change was observed in 17 aneurysms , shrinkage of aneurysms happened in 2 patients, residual body and neck of aneurysms enlarged in 4 patients. ConclusionTreatment of intracranial aneurysms with GDC embolization is a safe, reliable, and effective measure. Skillful techniques of the operator and correct management of complications are important factors affecting the outcome of operation. A period follow-up is essential to patients with partial embolism.
