Abstract
Salinomycin is a potassium ionophore antibiotic isolated from Streptomyces albus. It has been reported that salinomycin can suppress the growth, proliferation and metastasis of diverse cancer cells and cancer stem cells( CSCs),and even induce the apoptosis. Rencently, researchers have proposed several hypotheses with regards to the anticancer mechanisms of salinomycin, including attenuating self-renewal and toxic endurance of CSCs,the high expression of ATP-binding cassett( ABC) drug transporters, blocking Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway, leading to the accumulation of reactive oxygen species( ROS),as well as downregulating Akt/NF-κB signaling pathway, etc. Here is to elaborate on the underlying mechanisms of salinomycin, providing basis for further development of novel and effective anticancer drug.
