Abstract

Instead of being a uniform process of deformation, the formation of a continental faulted basin consists of some depositional cycles that are dominantly controlled by various episodic tectonic movements. The periodic movement, which is shown by basin filling sequence and regional interruptions, records the characteristics of episodic movement cycles and corresponding tectonic events. With Celaomiao basin as the study object and the filling sequence stratigraphy of the basin as the study basis, the author has analyzed the tectonic framework and subsidence history of the basin and the relationship between the tectonic movement and its depositional response. The relationships of episodic rifting to depositional cycles and sequence stratigraphic unit of the basin have also been discussed.
