The construction of metropolitan area is an unavoidable trend for large cities under the circumstances of rapid development.Nantong is located at the junction of coastal and river economic zones.It is an important city in the developing strategy of Jiangsu Province,because it is a transiting city connecting South Jiangsu and North Jiangsu and is one of the sub-central cities of Shanghai metropolitan area.However,the urban area of Nantong is of small size and narrow coverage.Therefore,it is necessary to establish a metropolitan area and establish harmonious strategies.The strategies should consider the integral requirements of the metropolitan development,and the coordinated development of both urban and rural areas.
