On the Mentality of Modern Chinese Intellectuals and Social Thoughts——A Diachronic Study from the Period of the Late Qing Dynasty and Early Years of the Chinese Republic to the May Fourth Movement

Abstract
This is a case study of the Chinese intellectuals in the period from the Late Qing Dynasty and early years of the Chinese Republic to the May Fourth Movement. The study attempts to analyze such factors of the Chinese intellectuals as their philosophical ideas, behavior patterns and values. The results show that ways of involvement of intellectuals in social political reforms in modern China can be classified into different types, and their spirit of temperament and psychological patterns attributed to their chosen type of involvement. The study also claims that the spirit of temperament and psychological patterns of these intellectuals also contribute to the opposition between the liberalists and the radicals.
