Abstract

Objective To investigate the protection of propofol on cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury of rats. Methods The rats were divided randomly into three groups:sham-operated group,ischemia-reperfusion model group and propofol-treated grouop.Ischemia-reperfusion model was induced by middle cerebral artery occlusion performed with thread inserted for 2 hours.24 hour later, brain infarct region, brain water content and the level of superoxide dismutase(SOD),malondialdehyde(MDA) content, nitric oxide(NO) were checkred. Results The infract volumes of propofol-treated group were significantly small compared with model group(P0.05).The brain water content of propofol-treated group was significantly lower than model group(P0.05).Propofol significantly prevented reduction of SOD activity, suppressed the level of MDA and NO in comparison with the model group(P0.05).Conclusion Propofol has an apparent protection against cerebral ischemia reperfusion injury in rats, the main mechanism is related to the alleviation of the injury of free radical.
