SAFETY PROBLEMS IN CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY IN SHANGHAI AND ITS CONTROL STRATEGIES

Objective To analyze the safety problems in the construction industry in Shanghai in order to provide the useful information of safety to prevent and control the occupational accidents. Methods Statistics and case studies of the fatal occupational injuries and case studies of the management problems of the construction market. Results The fatal occupational injuries of construction workers were more than half of those of the all workers in Shanghai between 1993 and 1997. Theoincidence of fatal injury was about 20.9 per 100 000 workers in the construction industry. Nearly half of the fatalities were related to falls from heights. All the above were related to the problems in construction market and constructing site management. There were especially subcontracts in construction market. no attention to safety education and safety training in the labors and management and employing those who did not take safety education and safety training. These led to many fatal occupational accidents occurred. Conclusions Only when more attention are paid to both better management of construction market and construction site safety, it is possible to effectively prevent and control occupational accidents in the construction industry.
