Abstract

Hybrid sterility in rice is a complex phenomenon. In the past twenty years,we have been working on the genetic studies on hybrid sterility in rice.Six F1 pollen sterility genes,or specific compatibility genes, were identified.Among them, five loci,S-a,S-b,S-c,S-d and S-e were mapped by the use of molecular markers. The genic model was confirmed to be'one-locus sporo-gametophytic interaction'.Furthermore,we proposed the idea that the hybrid sterility between indica and japonica in rice could be overcome by development of Indica-compatibilitic Japonica line. Some of the Indica-compatibilitic Japonica lines have been developed through molecular marker-assisted selection for the specific compatibility genes. The Indica-compatibilitic Japonica line would be a powerful tool for overcoming of the Indica-Japonica hybrid sterility and for utilization of the heterosis of F1 hybrids between indica and Japonica in rice.
