Abstract

Objective To evaluate preoperative transcatheter selective internal iliac artery embolization in the surgical treatment of pelvic tumors.Materials and Methods Selective internal iliac artery embolization with Gelfoam was performed in 12 patients with pelvic tumors, surgery was followed in 1~7 days (mean 2.7 days). Results Bilateral iliac arteries embolization was done in 7 cases with tumors located at sacrococcygeal region, while unilatral iliac artery embolization in 5 cases with tumors situated at iliac region. Significant decrease in bleeding during surgery was observed in 11 cases, the average of blood loss was 751 ml.Conclusion Preoperative transcatheter selective internal iliac artery embolization is an effective and safe technique, it can significantly reduce operative hemorrhage and increase removal proportion of the pelvic tumor.
