Comparative observation on the effect of topiramate and valproic acid on Tourette’s syndrome.

Abstract

Objective To compare the therapeutic effects of Topiramate and Valproic Acid on Tourette’s syndrome (TS). Methods Totally 48 TS patients were divided into treatment group consisted of 30 treated with Topiramate (50～150mg/d)and control group consisted of 18 TS cases treated with Valproic Acid (10～15mg/d) for a course of 24 weeks. The results in the two groups were analyzed on 8th, 24th weeks. Results The effective rates on 8th, 24th weeks in treatment group were 76% and 91%, respectively and that in the control group were 55% and 72%, respectively. Conclusion Topiramate is effective and safe in treatment of TS.
