Abstract
Objective To evaluate a safe method to reduce the volume of gastrocnemius muscle for calf Reduction effectively. Methods The volume of muscles would be reduced when their trophic nerves were cut off. With the principle, the muscular branches of tibial nerves to medial and lateral the gastrocnemius muscle were explored and cut off through a short incision atpopliteal crease. It would be confirm by the nerve electros-Timulator during the operation. The circumference and the shape of the leg were measured and recorded. Results This surgery was performed in 48 female patients (104 sides) suffering from hypertrophy gastrocnemius Muscles. After operation, the circumference of the leg was reduced (3.8±1.2)cm averagely. These cases were followed up for 3 ~24 months. They were able to walk immediately after operation. The function of the leg was not obviously influenced. Conclusion Selective neurotomy of the tibial nerve innervating the gastroc-Nemus muscle will reduce the yo/ume of gastrocnemius muscle. It was a safe, simple, painless, effective and quickly recovery method for calf shaping.
