Abstract

Liu Xizai,a famous literary writer in the Qing Dynasty, is famous for his YiGai(The General Survey of Art),which is a collection of all his notes on art and is a summary of earlier literary criticism.Through an investigation of ShiGai(The General Survey of Poetry),this article discusses his poetic aesthetics from the angle of both the writer and the reader. As a summary of Chinese poetic theories,ShiGai is as comprehensive and fair as YiGai,but Liu Xizai was not inevitably immune to the influence of his age and the former ages, and he put his poetic theory under the framework of Confucian poetry teaching. However, his advocation of art originating from life and the natural and fresh style is of great significance in guiding the later generations to study and appreciate literary works.
