Abstract
Objective To investigate the correlation between the level of hope and the anxiety and depression of patients after laryngeal cancer surgery. Methods 98 cases of patients who had underwent laryngeal cancer surgery were surveyed with Herth hope index(HHI), self-rating anxiety scale(SAS), self-rating depression scale(SDS) and questionnaires of general information made by the research team. Results 93.88% of surveyed patients had a middle-tohigh level of hope, with a population mean of(33.52 ±4.95) scores. The incidences of anxiety and depression were61.22% and 71.43% respectively. There was a significant negative correlation between the population and sub-items of hope and the patients' anxiety and depression, with statistically significant difference(P 0.01). Conclusion Among patients who have underwent laryngeal cancer surgery the incidence of anxiety and depression are high, the level of hope is medium to high, and there is a significant negative correlation between them. Nurses should offer timely intervention in accordance with patients' level of hope and their anxiety and depression, in order to enhance their hope and relieve their anxiety and depression, thus improving their mental health.
