Abstract

Objective To evaluate the antibacterial efficacy of root canal dressing using an in vitro model with Enterococcus faecalis(E.faecalis).Methods After biomechanical instrumentation,the root canals of sixty extracted teeth were infected by E.faecalis in vitro.The sixty infected teeth were randomly divided into 4 groups.All root canals were dressed for 7 days with different root canal dressing methods including sodium chloride,Vitapex,2% chlorhexidine,and 2% chlorhexidine gelatin.Then,the samples were inoculated in BHI agar and the colony of bacteria was counted(CFU/mL).Results The number of E.faecalis in group of sodium chloride was significantly higher than other groups(P 0.05),while the number of E.faecalis in group Vitapex was significantly higher than group of 2% chlorhexidineand and 2% chlorhexidine gelatin(P 0.05).There was no significant difference between group 2% chlorhexidine and group 2% chlorhexidine gelatin.Conclusion The results suggested 2% chlorhexidine gelatin as the best drug for root canal dressing.
