Abstract

This paper aims at discussing the important implications of Fourth-generation ports on the development of Chinese port,so as to provide theoretical support to Chinese port development under the new circumstances.Based on former studies and the port generation development theory initiated by the UNCTAD,it points out that Fourth-generation ports are headquarters for international economic allocation, which pro-actively participates international economic and trade decision-making and organize various economic activities, and then analyzes the major characteristics of Fourth-generation ports, discusses their implications on Chinese port development. The main conclusions are: Chinese port development should focus on fostering and attracting hinterland cargo, should strengthen the international shipping centers, and should further optimize the national port system.
