The Development of Relevance Theory on Grice's Conversational Implicature Theory

Abstract

Grice's conversational implicature theory is the basis of pragmatic theories. Relevance theory has more explanatory advantages than the conversational implicature theory. Based on the analysis of difference between two theories, this paper discusses the development of relevance theory on conversational implicature theory from communication, context, and pragmatic inference.
