A Re-understanding of Wang Guowei's Criticism of Zaju in the Yuan Dynasty

Abstract

While speaking highly of the zaju( poetic drama) in the Yuan Dynasty in his Opera History of the Song and Yuan Dynasties,Wang Guowei criticized its in guanmu( an innovative plotting expressing the uniqueness of life and art),thoughts and characters. Rooted in his unique academic background with great knowledge both from China and Western countries,Wang's opinions are reasonable but questionable. Zaju of the Yuan Dynasty has its unique emotional structure,audience and creation subjects in a given historical context,which determines its unique structure,thoughts and characterization. Those shortcomings in Wang's eyes exactly reflect the uniqueness from one point.
