Dexamethasone Decreases the Postoperative Nausea and Vomiting Associated With Fentany1 Patient Controlled Intravenous Analgesia

Abstract

Objective To investigate the effect of dexamethasone on the postoperative nausea and vomiting(PONV) associated with fentany1 patient controlled intravenous analgesia.Methods 100 female patients(n=50 in each group) underwent abdominal surgery under general anesthesia were enrolled in this randomized,double-blinded,placebo-controlled study.The dexamethasone group received dexamethasone 10mg IV before the induction of anesthesia and the control group received placebo(normal saline).The incidence and scores of PONV,scores of sedation and analgesia were evaluated.Results The incidence of PONV in dexamethasone group(36%) was significantly lower than that in control group (60%)(P0 05) during 24 hours after surgery,and the score of nausea was lower in dexamethasone group.Dexamethasone did not affect the scores of sedation and analgesia.Conclusion Dexamethasone can decrease the incidence of PONV associated with patient controlled intravenous fentany1 analgesia effectively.
