Abstract

In this paper, sensitivity analysis on the steady-state towing performance of a faired cable system was conducted through a numerical simulation method, which is mainly used to study the effect of some model coefficients of faired cable towing system. After giving the detailed mathematical model of a faired cable towing system and considering three steady state motion response parameters,i.e.the towing depth, towing tension, and kiting deviation as sensitivity criteria, the effect of model parameters changes;including cable drag coefficient, mass per unit length, weight, and hydrodynamic force centers, etc.,on the towing performance was computed. The simulation results show that cable drag coefficient, mass per unit length, and towed body's mass have remarkable effect on the towing performance, and the lateral deviation of buoyancy, weight and hydrodynamic force centers are strongly related to the kiting phenomenon.
