Abstract
AIM To study thc cancellous bone structure of cervical vertebrae in aged osteoporosis patients. METHODSForty five fresh cervical vertebrae were taken from aged ( n =24) and young ( n =21) groups. The cancellous bones (6 mm× 6 mm×5 mm) were obtained from the upper part of C5 and resected for bone histomorphometry. RESULTS Trabecular bone volume (TBV), the density and thickness of mean trabecular plate (MTPD, MTPT) and intertrabecular connecting parts (or trabecular nodes) in aged osteoporosis group were significantly higher than those in young group ( P 0.01); free ending trabecula (FET) in aged osteoporosis group were significantly 1ower than those in young group ( P 0.01) . Bone structural and morpho1ogical change in aged osteoporosis patients is one reason for decrease in mechanical strength leading to spine disease.
