Abstract

A three-dimensional numerical model representing groundwater flow in the multilayer aquifer system was developed to describe the basic groundwater flow rule in Weigan River Basin,Xinjiang,China. The finite difference method was used to calculate the model and identify the hydrogeologic parameters according to a long term groundwater head monitoring data. The groundwater resources were evaluated and the groundwater heads in the future 10 years under some different exploration conditions were forecast through the identified model. Then the rational model on how to utilize the groundwater resources is discussed. To capture the most of useless evaporation is appropriate to exploiting groundwater under such condition when evaporation is the main way of groundwater drainage,as long as there is enough water required by ecological development.
