Observation of therapeutic effects on gamma knife radio surgery for cavernous haemangioma of the cavernous sinus

Objective To study the effectiveness of gamma knife surgery in the treatment of cavernous haemangiomas of cavernous sinus(CHCS).Methods 12 patients with CHCS were treated by Leksell gamma knife who had been diagnosed by MRI.The maximum diameter of these lesions was 31 mm(24-40 mm).The tumor margin dose ranged from 9 to 14 Gy,mean 12.2 Gy.The tumor central dose ranged from 18 Gy to 28 Gy,mean 24.8 Gy.Results The radiological follow-up period was 6 to 40 months.No serious bleeding was found with gamma knife surgery.1 patient showed disappearance of tumor,8 patients showed shrunk,2 patients showed no change,1 patient showed enlargement.1 patient with enlarging was operated after gamma knife surgery.No serious bleeding was found during operation in this reopened patient.Conclusion Gamma knife surgery is effective and safe for cavernous haemangiomas of the cavernous sinus.
