Abstract

Objective To investigate the glucometabolic profile of patients with hyperthyroidism. Methods All inpatients with hyperthyroidism were consecutively recruited from Jan. 2005 to Jun. 2008. A total of 180 patients with hyperthyroidism were included in the study and all used oral glucose tolerance test(OGTT) to char- acterize the glucose metabolism status. Results The prevalence of diabetes mellitus in the inpatients with hy-perthyroidism was 26%, The prevalence of impaired glucose regulation was 33% and the total prevalence of ab- normal glucose metabolism was 59%. Without the use of OGTT, only with fasting blood glucose (FBG), 48 pa- tients (27%) with abnormal glucose metabolism would have remained undiagnosed in the energency admission group, and all the patients with IPH would have remained undiagnosed. Conclusion The frequency of dis-turbed glucose metabolism is considerably high in inpatients with hyperthyroidism. We should use OGTT early and discover the patients with hyperthyroidism and abnormal glucose metabolism in time, and pay attention to blood glucose abnormalities, regularly follow up and reasonably control the blood glucose.
