Abstract

Viscosity behavior of polyvinyl alcohol(PVA) in aqueous solution was determined by Ubbelohde viscometer. It is noted that, in the plot of reduced viscosity versus concentration, an upswing curve was observed in extremely dilute concentrations. It is concluded from further experimental results that, due to the conformation limitation of Ubbelohde viscometer, volume diluting method, popularly used to determine the viscosity of dilute polymer solution, can not be employed to determine the viscosity of polymer solution with extremely dilute concentrations. Based on the reasonable interpretation of the abnormal viscosity behavior of PVA in extremely dilute concentrations, a novel method is presented to determine the viscosity of polymer solution with extremely dilute solutions.
