Abstract

As air pollution is a regional environmental problem, the pollutants of surrounding region play a crucial role in the air quality of Beijing. The advanced regional prediction system(ARPS)and the air quality model Models-3 were combined to simulate the concentration, and the test shows that the modeling results are consistent with the monitoring results and the coupled models system can be used to study the transportation and the impact of pollutants from surrounding regions. The seasonal concentrations of PM_(10) during 2002 were simulated, and the influences of pollutants from Shanxi Province on Beijing were studied. It shows that pollutants from Shanxi can impact on Beijing's air quality in special meteorological conditions during typical period. In summer(August) the average contribution ratio of Shanxi Province is relatively high at about 15.44%,and it is low in winter(January) at about 2.25%.It is concluded that to control the emission sources of surrounding region of Beijing can not be ignored when enhancing the air quality of Beijing.
