A RANDOMIZED CONTROLLED CLINICAL TRIAL OF AZITHROMYCIN IN THE TREATMENT OF BACTERIAL INFECTIONS

Abstract

Azithromycin is a new azalide antibiotic. A randomized controlled clinical trial wasconducted to evaluate the efficacy and safety of azithromycin in comparison with roxithromycin in the treatment of 60 cases of bacterial infection. 30 patients were administered azithromycin once daily at the dosage of 500 mg on day 1 and 250 mg on day 2-5 each, The other 30 patients received roxithromycin at 300 mg bid on day 1 and 150 mg bid on day 2 - 5 each. So, the duration of treatment of either group was 5 days. The results showed that the overall clinical efficacy rates of azithromycin and roxithromycin were 93.3% and 90.0% respectively, and the bacterial clearance rates were 93.3% and 86.7% respectively. The incidence of adverse drug reaction of both groups was 10. 0% . These results indicated that there was no statistical difference in the clinical efficacy, bacterial clearance and adverse drug reaction between the two groups.
