Prevalence of depression and anxiety symptoms and the influencing factors of adolescent students in Shaoxing city

Objective To understand the prevalence of depression and anxiety symptoms and their influencing factors among school students in Shaoxing city,and to provide scientific evidence for effective intervention measures.Methods Cluster sampling method was used to select one university,two high schools and two middle schools in Shaoxing City.The sample of 2 348 students were chosen for the study,and the Zung's Self-rating Depression Scale(SDS) and Zung's Self-rating Anxiety Scale(SAS) was used to assess mental health status,and calculated the prevalence rate of depression and anxiety symptoms in different gender,grade and region,and the unconditional multivariate Logistic regression model to analyze the risk factors of depression and anxiety symptoms.Results The prevalence rate of depression and anxiety symptoms was 42.0% and 12.3%,respectively.The prevalence rate of depression in the male was significant higher than that of in the female(χ2=6.577,P0.05).The prevalence rate of anxiety in the female was significant higher than that of in the male(χ2=16.794,P0.01).The prevalence rate of depression and anxiety symptoms was significant difference in grade(χ2=52.181,P0.01;χ2=11.185,P0.05).The prevalence rate of depression symptoms among students in city was higher than countryside students(χ2=5.247,P0.05).The risk factors of depression and anxiety symptoms included the burden of study,noise,inadequate sleep,irregular breakfast,lack of friends an so on.Conclusion Depression and anxiety symptoms are common among school students in Shaoxing city,and social factors,environmental factors,individual lifestyles and so on were associated with them.Therefore,their mental health education should be strengthened.
