Abstract

Primers were designed based on the COI gene of mtDNA in Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergander) and Thrips tobaci Lindeman, and the PCR diagnosis was developed for F.occidentalis.The reliability of the diagnostic test were validated by performing with different stages of the pest, even 1 /120 of the DNA from singal adult. The survey of flower thrips host plants was conducted among 54 plant varieties in Nanjing, and the results from morphological observation by means of optical and electronic scanning microscope, and from PCR diognostic test, proved that the alien invasive insect—western flower thrips occurred in 25 out of 54 plant varieties in Nanjing, and indicated in 11 varieties the population density of western flower thrips were over 20% of the total thrips, and in 5 varieties the proprotion was even higher than 30%.
