Abstract

Objective To evaluate the efficacy and safety of lamivudine treatment and active-passive immunization during the last trimester of pregnancy in preventing intrauterine HBV infection. Methods 42 pregnant women with HBsAg/HBeAg and HBV DNA positive who agreed to attend the study were given 100 mg lamivudine daily from 28-week's gestation. The incidence of HBV-positive infants, the efficacy of antiviral therapy and complication of fetus and mothers were observed. Results 29 babies who were followed up for 7 months and showed that neither HBsAg nor HBV DNA was positive, anti-HBs was positive in 22 babies. The rate of vertical HBV transmission was zero and there was no complication in mothers and infants. Conclusion In the pregnant women with high titer of virus, reduction of virus content by lamivudine in the last trimester of pregnancy may be an effective and safe measure to reduce the rate of vertical HBV transmission and the risk of child vaccination breakthrough.
