Abstract
The status quo and the existing problems on desertification assessment index system are reviewed, and the hierarchical system of desertification assessment index in China is proposed in the paper. Based on the similarities and differences of the climatic types, the external forces of desertification, the land use types,soil characteristics, the gauge of assessment and the extents of desertification,the desertification assessment index system in China is arranged to be a hierarchical system. Thus all the desertification types can be embodied in this system.
