Abstract
The relationship between mind and substance is something essential in literary criticism;and it is also an important issue in the ancient Chinese literary theories. The raising of this question and the attempts for the solution started from the Renaissance at the 14th or 15th century Europe whereas it can be found in the Book of Songs that could reflect the lives in the Western Zhou Dynasty, being in particular embodied in composition styles of Fu,Bi,and Xing(i.e.,analogy).The Confucianists put forward the Ethical Theory and the Taoists the Equality of Things, both of which pay due attention to the poetic relationship between man and nature. After a long development,LIU Xie's article Wu Se(relationship between literature and reality) in the Carving Dragon at Core of Literature proposes a theory called Mind-Substance Transference, which makes a theoretical summary between man's affect and natural scenery and hence started the Synaesthesia Theory between Mind and Scene. At the psychology level,LIU Xie's proposal of mind's transference along scenery and trampling with the heart aims at a poet's observation along the changes of the external matters in artistic composition to its profound exploration of the inner affect world, and hence reveals the mental activity laws. Therefore, the mind-substance transference theory has an important status in the history of the Chinese literary criticism.
