Abstract
Objective To evaluate the safety and efficacy of candesartan on elderly patients with hypertension. Methods All 66 elderly patients with hypertension over the age of 60 were randomly divided into two groups,34 cases of candesartan group treated with candesartan 4-8 mg daily,32 cases of captopril group treated with captopril 12.5-37.5 mg daily. They were treated for 8 weeks, the blood pressure, heart rate, blood glucose, serum potassium and renal function of two groups were compared, and we recorded adverse events that might occur such as coughing during medication. Results The total efficiency were 82.4%(28/34 cases) and 75%(24/32 cases),and there were no differences between two groups. After 8 weeks' treatment, the blood pressure of two groups reduced, the differences were statistically significant(P0.05).After treatment, the laboratory indexes, such as heart rate and blood biochemistry, showed no significant differences(P0.05).Conclusion Candesartan can effectively and safely reduce blood pressure in elderly hypertensive patients.
