Olfactory ensheathing cells transplantation enhancing sciatic nerve regeneration

Abstract

Objective:To investigate the role of exogenous olfactory ensheathing cells (OECs) in promoting nerve regeneration after sciatic nerve injury in adult rats. Methods: Thirty SD rats were randomly divided into OECs group and control group. A 5 mm gap left by sciatic nerve resection was bridged with a silicone tube prefilled with gelatin. Purified OECs or saline were injected into the tube respectively. On 4,8 and 12 weeks after sciatic nerve repair,nerve regeneration was evaluated by morphology,electrophysiology and histochemistry study. Results: Sciatic nerve regeneration was obtained in all rats after 4,8 and 12 weeks,and the regeneration of OECs group was better than that of control group( P 0.05). Conclusion: Exogenous OECs can obviously enhance peripheral nerve regeneration.
