Relationship between preschoolers' anxiety and parenting styles: A longitudinal study.

Abstract

Objective: The present study aimed at examining the relationships between anxieties and parenting styles of preschoolers.Methods: 346 preschoolers aged 4-6 were selected and their parents were asked to complete the Preschool Anxiety Scale and Parenting Style Questionnaire,at two time points,one year apart.Results: ①The level of anxiety,authoritarian,and permissive parenting style declined,whereas the level of authoritative parenting style kept stable;②Preschoolers' anxiety was positively related to authoritarian and permissive parenting style significantly;③Authoritarian parenting style could not predict preschoolers' anxiety significantly in one year,whereas permissive parenting style could,moreover,generalized anxiety and permissive parenting style could predict each other significantly.Conclusion: Preschoolers' anxiety is closely related to authoritarian and permissive parenting style.
