Expression and Its Significance of Bcl-2, Bax after Spinal Cord Injury in Rats

Abstract

Objective:To observe the expression of Bcl-2, Bax and the relationship with apoptosis in spinal cord injury. Methods:Twenty-eight SD rats were used in this experiment. Spinal cord impact was performed using Allen′s method. At the follow times (4, 8, 24, 48, 72, or 168hr), the spinal cord was taken. Then the observation of the pathological changes and apoptosis on the HE staining and TUNEL staining sections were performed.Immunohistochemistry methods were used to study the expression of Bcl-2, Bax gene. Results: TUNEL-positive cells were maximal at 8 hr after injury. There was a weak positive expression of Bcl-2 protein at 4hr after injury. By 24hr after injury, the positive expression of Bcl-2 was maximal. The positive expression of Bax was maximal at 8hr after injury. Conclusion: Apoptosis phenomenon presents in rat spinal cord injury. Bcl-2 protein and Bax gene may be the important factors influencing apoptosis and pathological processes after spinal cord injury.
