Prevention and treatment of complicated thrombosis following the embolization of intracranial aneurysms with controllable coils

Abstract

Objective To study the possible causes of cerebral infarction complication during or after intracranial aneurysm embolization with controllable coils and point out related preventive and therapeutic measures. Methods 193 subarachnoid hemorrhage patients with intracranial aneurysms embolized with controllable coils from June 2001 to March 2004 was analyzed retrospectively in regard of their clinical features and management. The thrombosis of the parent artery occurred in 3 cases. Results Among the 3 accidents, there were 2 cases with thrombosis (1 complicated concurrently with carotid-cavernous fistula) during the procedure, and 1 case after intracranial aneurysm embolization. Antispastic and other supporting measures were taken in all cases after the procedure. All 3 cases included 1 recovering uneventfully, 1 discharging automatically. Another 1 case got no change. Conclusion The complication of thrombosis may occur during or after the procedure of intracranial aneurysm embolization. Patients and imaging changes must be carefully observed in time. Try to find out complication timely and correctly judge and manage during and after embolization.
