Toxin Analysis of Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning from Gymnodinium sp. and Alexandrium Catenella in Bohai Sea

Abstract

This paper is aimed at accumulating the basic data on the red-tide through analyzing the paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP) from Gymnodinium sp. and Alexandrium catenella in the Bohai Sea area of Tianjin. By culturing Gymnodinium sp. and Alexandrium catenella in the laboratory, we selected Gymnodinium sp. in the logarithm phase and flat stage and also Alexandrium catenella in the flat stage as objectives of our research. The toxins of paralytic shellfish poisoning were analyzed in the Gymnodinium sp. and Alexandrium catenella by using high performance liquid chromatograghy (HPLC). The results showed that Gymnodinium sp. does not contain paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP) in cell; Alexandrium catenella contains C toxin and GTX1-4 toxin with a total toxin content of approximately 10.81 fmol/cell. It is concluded that Gymnodinium sp. does not contain paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP) in cell, but we can not exclude the possibility of containing other toxins. Because of containing paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP), Alexandrium catenella belongs to the poisonous microalgae and therefore we should make a close monitoring to it.
