On the cultural connotations of English and Chinese color words and their translation

This paper presents the differences between English and Chinese color words through a comparative analysis, pointing out that due to different historic backgrounds, national mentalities, cultural traditions,religious beliefs and etc., there exist many differences in expressing colors and color words as well as in approaching the same color. It puts forward four methods for translating the color words and holding the view that a deep understanding of social and culture-loaded words is the core of translation.
