Abstract

The difference between Chinese and Western language is that of the pictograph(or ideograph) and alphabetic language.Such a difference is rooted in two different ideological systems, which is derived from the copula shi.The Western word being can be dated back to the ontology' of Aristotelian metaphysics and its attached attributes or forms. In terms of formal logic,it includes three logical laws based on the law of identity.Being is not only the base of unity of philosophy and logic but also the base of religion and science.Furthermore,it is the base of various opposite categories, which are represented by subject-object and culture-nature.In a word, being involves a thinking mode of vertical logic.Strictly speaking, the Chinese word shi,in its traditional use, does not have a copula effect according to formal logic. It represents a analogous thinking, that is,saying different things as the same. This is called xin(兴) which means symbolization. In effect, the tradition of Chinese language thinking belongs to one of horizontal logic, which dissolves the division of Western disciplinary boundaries.
