Abstract
The intercalation complex involving the layer silicate kaolinite and organic compound is studied through the application of infrared absorption spectroscopy and X-ray powder diffraction. The acrylonitrile can be intercalated between the layers of kaolinite by displacing intercalated ammonium acetate from kaolinite/ammonium acetate complex. The XRD pattern showed that the layer interval of kaolinite increased. The IR spectra provide evidence that the inner-surface hydroxyl groups of kaolinite are hydrogen bonded to intercalated DMSO molecules. When there is a initiator, the acrylonitrile monomer can be polymerized between the layers.
