Abstract

Objective To investigate the application of mini nutritional assessment (MNA) in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).Methods The IBD patients who underwent examination and treatment from September 2008 to February 2010 were enrolled in the investigation. The patients' nutritional status was assessed by MNA.The levels of serum hemoglobin (Hb),albnmin (ALB),prealbumin (PA),total lymphocyte count (TLC),Ca2+,K+ and Na+ were detected too. Results 85 patients (46 males and 39 females) were enrolled in the study according to the criteria. The MNA process classified 12.94% as adequate nutritional status group,43.53% as malnutrition risk group and 43.53% as frank malnutrition group, and there were no significant differences in patients' age,TLC,PA,K+ and Ca2+ Among the three groups(P0.05).The Hb in frank malnutrition group was significantly decreased,as compared with that in malnutrition risk group (P0.01).There were no significant differences between frank malnutrition group and adequate nutritional status group(P0.05).The ALB in frank malnutrition group was obviously decreased,as compared with that in malnutrition risk group(P0.01),and with that in adequate nutritional status group(P0.01).The Na+ levels in frank malnutrition group were significantly decreased,as compared with those in malnutrition risk group (P0.05).However there were no significant differences in Na+ levels between frank malnutrition group and adequate nutritional status group(P0.05).Conclusion MNA is helpful for nurses and doctors to assess the nutritional status of patients with IBD effectively.
