Abstract

Objective To study MRI diagnosis of vertebral body compression caused by vertebral injury and primary osteoporosis. Methods MRI appearance of 107 cases(123 vertebral bodies) with vertebral body compression caused by acute vertebral injury and primary osteoporosis were analyzed.Result MRI appearance of primary osteoporosis was as follows: normal bone marrow and high signal contained in all deformed vertebral bodies ;the posterior bone fragments of the vertebral body protruding into the vertebral canal ; a band of low signal beneath vertebral and plate on T1 vertebral body ;the outline of the ahead and back edges of the vertebral body being normal or slightly concaved; the vein in the vertebral body clearly shown, which was MRI appearance of osteoporosis compressions. The vertebral bodies showed even low signal and partly with normal bone marrow. The outline of the vertebral bodies was obviously abnormal. There was hematoma besides vertebrae, bone fracture line and spinal cord edema or manifastation of cyst caused by traumetic compression. In addition , the strengthened vertebral body was an important signal of the recovery from bone fracture, and a criteria of new or old bone fracture. Conclusion MRI can be used to identify vertebral body compression fracture and the duration of fracture or primary osteoporsis.
