Abstract

Objective To evaluate the efficacy of celecoxib in the treatment of acute pain after hand surgery. Methods In this double-blinded,randomized parallel-group trial,120 adult patients were divided into three groups.Group A received placebo for 5 days.Group B were given celecoxib after surgery for 5 days. Group C received an additional dose celecoxib preoperatively.Visual analog scale was used to evaluate postoperative pain. Results Compared with placebo, celecoxib significantly reduced postoperative pain (P<0.01).When the additional celecoxib before surgery group was compared with the celecoxib after surgery group, significant pain relief was noticed in the first day after the surgery(P<0.01).Conclusion Celecoxib was useful in the control of mild to moderate pain after hand surgery.Additional dose celecoxib administered before surgery was effective in reducing pain at postoperative day one.The application of short-term,normal dose celecoxib was safe and well tolerated.
