Effect of neoadjuvant therapy on local advanced rectal cancer

Abstract

Objective To evaluate the effect of neoadjuvant therapy on local advanced rectal cancer.Methods Data were assessed from 22 patients with local advanced rectal cancer who underwent neoadjuvant therapy with FOLFOX(oxaliplatin 130mg/m2,d1;calcium folinate 200mg,d1-d3;fluorour-acil 500ng/m2,d1-d3) regimen.The total dose of radiotherapy(RT) was 45Gy(1.8Gy 25,over 5 weeks).Results Sixteen patients underwent anterior resection.The sphincter preservation rate was 72.7%(16/22).Six patients underwent abdomino-perineal resection.Three patients(13.6%)showed complete regression(pCR),and overall response rate(CR+PR) was 59.1%.Tumor downstaging was observed in 13 patients(59.1%).Conclusion Neoadjuvant therapy can cause tumor shrinkage and downstaging,and raise the rate of sphincter-preserving surgery.
