The therapeutic effects of cataract extraction with intraocular lens implantation in congenital cataract

Objective To evaluate the therapeutic effect of cataract extraction with intraocular lens implantation in congenital cataract. Methods A retrospective study ranged from 3 to 5 years which involved 175 eyes of 108 patients aged from 3 to 14 years who underwent cataract surgery.Visual acuity,corneal curvature,axial length and refraction were periodically measured. Results 5 years after surgery,the mean axial length of involved eyes in single congenital cataract was not significantly different from the vehicle control( P 0.05).It was also occurred in double eyes involved.All involved eyes in both groups showed a myopic drift,it was significantly different between both groups( P 0.01). Conclusions The ocular growth of children was found to be unaffected by the intraocular lens implantation in congenital cataract.The choice of intraocular lens should be retained in physiological hyperopia according to their ages in pseudophakic children.
